Iron SkySome of you might have read about this, most of you have probably not.

Iron Sky, an internet crowd-sourced movie, which has taken about 6 years to complete, finally has a date for its premiere.

It will launch at the Berlin International Film Festival this Saturday.

The movie is a Sci-fi comedy created by companies in Germany and in Australia. The funding for the movie has mainly been generated by the community giving its support to this movie, through its website, merchandising store and the use of social networks.

The plot is quite challenging, here’s a summary:

Towards the end of World War II the Nazi scientists made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity. From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ‘45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. This base was to build a powerful invasion fleet and return to take over the Earth once the time was right.

Now it’s 2018, and it’s the time for the first American Moon landing since the 70′s. Meanwhile the Nazi invasion, that has been over 70 years in the making, is on its way, and the world is goose-stepping towards its doom.

The history of science Fiction is complex. Very complex. There are many streams ranging from Fantasy to cyber-punk and Space Operas.

Artist Ward Shelly made a map, that includes (as far as I can tell) all of this in one single image. It’s big and it’s chaotic, but I guess it’s all there.

I already found a couple of movies I’d like to watch for the next weekend!

Aside form this one, Ward Shelly has many other interesting maps on his site, “Who invented the Avant-Garde”, and “Stories from A to Z” are worth to have a look at!

Anne Francis, an actress well known for her 1950s appearance in several interesting productions and made fame in the classic sci-fi movie “Forbidden Planet” has died at age 80.

The movie “Forbidden Planet” is mentioned by many people one of the greatest movies of the Golden age of the sci-fi genre in which a starship crew goes to investigate the silence of a planet’s colony only to find two survivors and a deadly secret that one of them has.

Tyranny 2010 postcard for web

Tyranny is a series that you can view for free online. I have been watching the first 6 short episodes and it really looks good. The plot thickens fast and is a bit complex, but it grabs you quick enough!

This is the first free production I am watching and I am quite impressed. As said, the plot is good and catchy and the quality is good too.

From their website:

On November 22, 1999, 30 year old San Francisco artist and filmmaker Daniel McCarthy volunteers for what is to be a harmless grad student’s neurological experiment to record brainwave patterns in connection to various tasks. When Daniel returns home, he makes the shocking discovery that he’s been missing for eight days and has no memory of where he’s been or what he might have done. In an effort to jog his memory, he begins to conduct sensory deprivation experiments in his downtown loft. During these experiments, Daniel begins having terrifying and puzzling visions of things that he believes will occur sometime in the near future – a future involving corporations that don’t yet exist using advanced technology that hasn’t yet been invented by people who are secretly manipulating governmental systems of the world that are not yet in place. These puzzling visions send him on a mission around the world in an effort to not only understand them but to try and prevent the future from unfolding the way his visions describe.”

After seeing so many (sci-fi) series being cancelled, last one to include is Stargate Universe, maybe this is the way science fiction can survive without the need of a large mainstream audience.

The series is mainly sponsored by the series online shop, on which they sell cloths and other Tyranny merchandising. I believe this to be a good approach, as many people watching series like this, or other less mainstream series (read: sci-fi) are people that like merchandising and are not afraid of buying online.

Would this be the way forward for Galactica, V, Defying Gravity, Stargate Universe and all the other series that cannot stay alive on the ad network we call TV?

Nice short, that, even though the storyline is … minimal, looks impressive. Made with no money, just a little time and a lot of passion as the creators BC2010 write on their Vimeo page.

Now we know that we will have a very dark night tonight, a Lunar eclipse and Solstice at the same time. I wondering what movie is on at the moon tonight….

The movie Iron Sky, that is being produced in a low budget DIY style, has probably found a way to finance part of the production.

On their website, http://www.ironsky.net you can buy a “volunteer movie ticket” for minimal 1€ to watch the first 5 minutes of the footage that’s coming out between now and the next 12 months.

The money is not to watch it, at least not directly, as it will be a coming out in parts. So you’ll actually be paying for the not yet existing minutes of the movie.

The concept of the movie started as a kind of joke on YouTube, and is evolving in a full cinematic production. This is the storyline:

Towards the end of World War II the Nazi scientists made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity. From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ‘45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne(Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. This base was to build a powerful invasion fleet and return to take over the Earth once the time was right.
