Quantcast

As mentioned in previous posts, I forwarded my domain to free hosting space on 000webhost.com. The initial plan was to set the blog up as cheap as possible (only spent 8$ so far) and using a few ads, try to make the blog generate enough money to contract a decent webhost.

I am now running the blog on 000webhost for about a month. The experience, although educational, has not really been very pleasant.

  • From these 4 weeks, It took the Go-Daddy 1 week to update and correctly forward to the 000webhost DNS servers. This is, I believe, due to the slow response of those.
  • The particular server this blog is hosted on (cursed nr. 14) has been down for 4 days last week. Causing Google, Bing and Yahoo to stop indexing the site and therefore causing a delay in search engine visibility.
  • For the last couple of days the server has been responding very slow. I cannot access my site through the office network, as the connection times out continuously. I’m worried this is not only in this office, but also on slower connections.

I am very aware that free hosting is … well… free and that the service comes as-is. 000webhost is very clear about that. Also, I start to have quite some content on the blog, and the front page is pulling information from different database tables and external sources (ads etc.) and I have about 18 active plug-ins.

I can imagine that that might be a bit more demanding than your average storefront one-visit-a-month website. However, even though the hosting is free and I like it when something breaks (…), the time spent in troubleshooting, waiting for changes to happen and out-of-my-control server outages, I should start asking myself how free it really is.
